Field hockey at the 1968 Summer Olympics

In the XIX. Summer Olympics 1968 in Mexico City was held a competition in hockey (men).

Tournament mode

The 16 participants played in two groups A and B. The first, and the second of the groups qualified for the semifinals. The Third and Fourth played first crossing and then to the placement of 4 to 8 places 9 to 16 of the groups were no cross-over games in a direct comparison between the detected 5 to 8. Two German teams

Just this once took two German teams participate in an Olympic hockey tournament. Both teams played in Group A and wore on October 17, 1968, the only official match between them out, under the same flag: black, red and gold with the Olympic rings. West Germany narrowly won 3-2 and qualified for the semifinals. There they were subject to Pakistan 0-1 N.V. and in the match for bronze India 1-2. The East German team won the match for third place against 11 UK with 2:1 aet

The 11th place (out of 16) had fatal consequences for the sport of hockey in the GDR: The governance failed the German Hockey Sports Association henceforth almost any promotion and cut the east- hockey player for many years by the world events from.
