Filain, Haute-Saône

Filain is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Filain situated at an altitude of 265 m above sea level, about 12 km south of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village extends north of the river valley Ognon, in a valley at the source of Filaine, between the forest heights of Bois de Filain in the south and Les Monnins in the north.

The area of ​​15.79 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the undulating landscape between the river valleys of the south and Ognon Saône in the northwest. The central part of the area is crossed by the valley of the Filaine that is oriented in a northwest-southeast. The creek originates in the area of the village and drains the area south to Linotte. Otherwise, there are no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. The trough of Filain is flanked on both sides of the plateau-like hills, usually reach the heights of 300 to 350 m. They consist of limestone of the middle Jurassic period. South of the Filaine the plateau of the Bois de Filain expands ( to 320 m). In the west, the municipality's area extends to the foot of the ridge of the Bois de Sainte -Anne. To the north, the land rises gently to the predominantly agricultural plateau of Les Monnins, on the 401 meters, the highest elevation of Filain is achieved.

To Filain the Hofsiedlungen Les Monnins include (385 m) at the level of the same name, Les Goichots (317 m) at the eastern foot of the altitude of Les Monnins as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Filain are Vallerois - Lorioz and Neurey -lès -la- Demie in the north, Dampierre -sur- Linotte and Vy- lès- Filain in the east, the south and Authoison Échenoz -le- Sec and Vellefaux in the West.

History

The place name comes from the Latin name Fons Lanae and means as much as a source of Lana ( Laine, today Filaine ). Is first mentioned Filain in 1159 as a possession of the monastery Bellevaux. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government has held the noble family of Filain who built a castle here and went out to the middle of the 15th century. Together with the Franche -Comté Filain came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Since 2000 Filain is a member of the comprehensive 21 villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays de Montbozon.

Attractions

The village church of Filain was built in the 18th century and has a rich interior, including furniture in the Louis XVI style, statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary from the 16th century and other statues from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Filain castle, originally dating back to the 14th century, was rebuilt in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. It is flanked by two towers and houses a rich interior from the 16th to the 18th century and a collection of hunting trophies and a mushroom exhibition. In the village there are two more places of residence as well as several houses in the traditional style of the Haute -Saône from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Population

With 220 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Filain is one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 403 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Filain was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are now several companies of local small businesses. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Loulans - Verchamp after Vellefaux. Further road links exist with Neurey -lès -la- Demie and Authoison.
