Frank Mantooth

Frank Mantooth ( born April 11, 1947 in Tulsa, Oklahoma; † January 30, 2004 in Garden City, Kansas) was an American jazz arranger, pianist, composer and university teacher.

Life and work

Mantooth first learned to play guitar before he moved during his high school days to the piano. Then he studied music at North Texas State University, where he earned Bachelor 1969. There he was a member of the jazz program of Ashley Alexander, which grossed later Mantooth three albums with the arrangements. During his military service 1969-73 Mantooth was arranger for the Air Force Academy Falco Aires and then spent some years in Austria, where he continued his piano studies at the Music Academy in Vienna until 1977. During this time he worked with Richard Austrians and Wayne Darling, who has worked on his debut album Our First (1977).

After his return to the United States he wrote commissioned works for Doc Severinsen, the Kansas City Symphony and the Madison Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he published a five-part textbook The Best Chord Changes for the World's Greatest Standards, which appeared at Hal Leonard Corporation. He also composed since the late 1970s, a number of works for big bands and jazz ensembles. In 1987, he took on some of his compositions with big band. For five of his albums, Suite Tooth, Persevere, Dangerous Precedent, Sophisticated Lady and A Miracle, he received a total of eleven Grammy nominations. For A Miracle also had Pete Christlieb, Kevin Mahogany, Diane Schuur, Pat LaBarbera and Bobby Shew with. Mantooth taught at DePaul University and was a guest conductor of the Texas All- State High School Jazz Ensemble in San Antonio ( Texas). He last lived in Garden City (Kansas ), where he died in 2004.

Awards

In 1999, the Florence Crittenton Foundation Mantooth 's Citizen of the Year Award; In the same year he was honored at the Wichita Jazz Festival with the Homer Osborne award for his performance in the jazz pedagogy. In 2004 he was admitted posthumously into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.
