Fraser Stoddart

Sir James Fraser Stoddart ( born May 24, 1942 in Edinburgh ) is a British chemist.

Life and work

Fraser Stoddart, son of Thomas Fraser Stoddart and Jane Spalding Hislop Stoddart, visited from 1950 to 1960, the Melville College in Edinburgh and then studied chemistry at the University of Edinburgh, 1964, he received his BSc in 1966 the Ph.D. ( Supervisor: Edmund Hirst ) and 1980 the rarely conferred DSc degree. From 1967 to 1970 Stoddart was a post - doctoral student at Queen 's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. In 1970 he moved to the University of Sheffield, where he was a lecturer until 1978 and 1981-1990 Reader in Chemistry. From 1978 to 1981 he conducted research at the Laboratory of Imperial Chemical Industries in Runcorn. From 1990 to 1997 Stoddart was Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Birmingham from 1993 to 1997 as Head of the School of Chemistry. From 1997 to 2003 he was Saul Winstein Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, which he already knew from a gas baptism Maintenance 1978. Since 2003 he has Fred Kavli Professor of Nanoscience at the University of California, Los Angeles, and from 2003 to 2007 he was director of the California NanoSystems Institute. Visiting Professor stays led him in 1980 to the Texas A & M University, 1985 and 1987 at the University of Messina, Italy, and in 1987 at the École Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Mulhouse, France.

Stoddart research in the field of nanoscience, supramolecular chemistry, physical organic chemistry and stereochemistry. He studied dendrimers Katenane, rotaxanes and other non-covalently but mechanically -bound substances. Bistable rotaxanes Katenane and he uses as molecular switches. He also works on artificial molecular machines.

Since 1968 he was married to Norma Agnes Scholan († 2004), with whom he had two daughters.
