Frederick of Luxembourg

Friedrich ( * 965, † October 6, 1019 ) from the family of Wigeriche was Count in the Moselle district and Vogt of Stavelot and Malmedy. He was the son of Count Siegfried, who was governor of Saint Maximin in Trier and Echternach, and Hedwig.

Through his sister Cunegonde, he was the brother of the emperor Henry II, against whom he stood up in 1008, which is why he was imprisoned from 1011 to 1012. After reconciliation with Henry, he was back on its side.

Friedrich married Irmtrud of the Wetterau (* 972, † after 1015 ), a daughter of Count Heribert of Wetterau and Kinziggau and the heiress of Gleiberg from the family of Conradines, with whom he had at least ten children:

Since Frederick grandson Konrad I. in 1083 assumed the title of Count of Luxembourg, he is not only regarded as the progenitor of the Luxembourg Graf house, but often described himself as Count of Luxembourg.
