Frýdek-Místek District

The Okres Frýdek- Místek ( German district Friedeck -Mistek ) is a town in the Moravian-Silesian Region Region ( Moravian Silesia) in the Czech Republic. ( The Okresy were roughly comparable to the districts in Germany, and the district administrations were dissolved on 31 December 2002. )

The district is located in north-eastern Moravia in the border with Poland and Slovakia. It extends from the Upper Silesian coal basin to the Beskids. In the former Okres Frýdek- Místek approximately 209 300 people live in 72 municipalities ( Obec ), of which five cities.

The Okres is an industrial and mining area, but also has a large forest density; about half of the area consists of deciduous and coniferous forest; this is one of the highest in the Czech Republic. In the area there are two nature reserves ( Beskydy, Poodří ) and 18 nature reserves and 19 natural monuments.

Until the 90s, the heavy industry took the economic lead. By restructuring and closures, unemployment grew; it doubled in a very short time and is now among the ten highest in the Republic. A reorientation of the economy is expected to bring relief. There will be designated industrial zones, trade centers built and promoted the housing. These are just some of the measures.
