Gaetano Cicognani

Gaetano Cardinal Cicognani (* November 26, 1881 in Brisighella, Province of Ravenna, Italy, † February 5, 1962 in Rome) was a diplomat of the Holy See and later a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

After his ordination on September 24, 1904 Cicognani studied in Rome Catholic theology, philosophy, law and canon law. In 1910 he received his doctorate in these subjects and was thereafter notary at the Roman Rota. In 1915 he entered the service of the State Secretariat and worked for this in The Hague, Belgium and Spain.

Pope Pius XI. appointed him on 11 January 1925 Titular Archbishop of Ancyra and Apostolic Nuncio to Bolivia. The episcopal ordination he received on February 1, 1925 by the then Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri.

From 15 June 1928 Cicognani Nuncio in Peru and since June 13, 1935 in Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 12 March 1938, the Pope asked him to March 30, to leave the country. Cicognani came to the call and left Austria on April 5. Already on 16 May he was nuncio in scarred by civil war Spain.

On January 12, 1953 it took Pius XII. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Cecilia in the College of Cardinals.

In the same year he returned to Rome and was on 7 December, Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation of Rites, and a year later on November 18, 1954 Pro- Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura. He held until 14 November 1959, the office.

John XXIII. appointed him on 14 December 1959, Cardinal Bishop of Frascati.

His two- years younger brother Giovanni Cicognani Amleto (1883-1973) was Cardinal Secretary of State since 1961.
