Gaziosmanpaşa is the capital of the district of the Turkish province of İstanbul as well as a district on the European side of İstanbul. Gaziosmanpaşa had according to the last census, 460 675 inhabitants (as at end December 2008).

Population Development

Part Gaziosmanpaşas arose since about 1970 as Gecekondu, many residents were immigrants from Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia Kurds who illegally built their accommodations. The part of the district which was built up with Gecekondu was supplied with water and electricity only since the late 1980s. Because of the enormous population trends emerged in 2008 from Gaziosmanpaşa two new districts Arnavutköy and Sultangazi.

Sports

The district and the district of the same name are represented by sports club Gaziosmanpaşaspor. The football section of the club played in the 1990s and 2000s, a total of nine seasons in the second-highest professional league, today TFF 1 Lig For summer, the club was relegated from the TFF 1 Lig and has performed since then in the Lig TFF 2 or 3 TFF Lig

In addition Gaziosmanpaşaspor presented with the German -Turkish Taekwondoin Servet Tazegül a gold medal winner at the Olympic Summer Games in 2012. Tazegül won the gold medal in the weight category up to 68 kilograms and was the first Turkish Taekwondo Olympic champion.
