General of the branch

General ( with the addition of the type of weapon ), and the branch of service, such as general of infantry, designated a historic, applicable to 1945 rank group of generals in the imperial army, in the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht as well as in the Joint Army of Austria - Hungary or the Imperial Russian Army.

In the German armed forces the general was usually at the same time commanding general of a corps, army corps or similar major military association. In the Imperial Navy and the Navy this rank corresponded to the Admiral, in the Waffen- SS SS- Obergruppenführer.

History

In the 18th century it was in Prussia and other German States customary to give the rank of General with the addition of the branch of service from which the General had emerged and the originally determined the character of the troops he commands. In part, the older terms such as " Feldzeugmeister " in the armed forces of Austria-Hungary until the 20th century received. Also in the Russian army rank these designations were introduced first by Peter I.

Until the mid- 1930s there was in the German armed forces only general of infantry, cavalry and artillery. Only the Wehrmacht led this rank also for generals of other branches of service.

Generals of the army in this grade group were provided for the instruction-level Army Corps. Who actually held the position, led the additional designation corps commander or commanding general (eg Infantry General and Commanding General of X Corps ). This function designation was introduced in Prussia in 1816 with the permanent army corps structure. About the general state of the field marshal, until 1854, the shunting between rank Colonel-General was introduced in Prussia.

The equivalent to General ( with the addition of the type of weapon ) in the Navy was the Admiral.
