George William Vella

George William Vella ( born April 24, 1942 in Żejtun ) is a Maltese politician of the Malta Labour Party (MLP ) and currently foreign minister of his country.

Life

Vella, who is a doctor by profession, was founded in 1978 during the 4th legislature for the first time when he nachrückte member of the House of Representatives as a successor to the retiring MPs Emmanuel Attard Bezzina. He was also in 1978 alternate representatives in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council, and Rapporteur for pollution caused by maritime polluters at the conference of local and regional authorities in Europe (Conference of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe, CLRAE), which is connected to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council. In the subsequent elections in 1981, he was in the constituency 3, which includes, in addition Żejtun also Fgura and Marsascala selected and belonged to the House of Representatives during the 5th term lasting until 1987 to.

1987 Vella lost his seat and was from January to May 1987 still Permanent Representative of Malta in the Euro Europe. He was elected member of the House of Representatives in the constituency 3 back in 1992 and belongs to the Parliament on after his subsequent re-election in 1996, 1998, 2003 and 2008.

In March 1992, Vella was elected deputy chairman of the Malta Labour Party and as such was also spokesman for parliamentary and Foreign Affairs. At the same time he was temporarily Vice Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee of Malta and the European Union. During the seventh Parliament, he was most recently between 1995 and 1996 also a member of the Parliamentary Committees on the Rules of Procedure ( Standing Committee on House Business ) and for Foreign Affairs ( Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs ).

During his long parliamentary membership, he led several delegations of Malta at international conferences and seminars on international relations and environmental issues, such as in Strasbourg, Aachen, London, Brussels, Paris, Moscow, Cairo, Damascus and Tripoli.

After the victory of the MLP in the 1996 elections Vella was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Environment on 29 October 1996 by Prime Minister Alfred Sant in his cabinet and held that role until the defeat at the early parliamentary elections in September 1998.

In May 2003, Charles Mangion followed him as deputy chairman of the MLP. 2010 Vella was foreign affairs spokesman of the MLP Group in the House of Representatives.

After the victory of the MLP during the elections in March 2013 Vella was again on March 13, 2013 Secretary of State.
