Giacomo Giustiniani

Giacomo Giustiniani ( born December 20 1769 in Rome, † February 24, 1843 ) was a Cardinal of the 19th century.

Life

Giustiniani, who came from a noble family, was Apostolic after completing his studies in 1792 prothonotary and took minor orders. On his 23rd birthday, he became a doctor of civil and canon law. The next year, he sent Pope Pius VI. as papal legate in Romagna. After his return in 1795 was Giustiniani prothonotary of the Holy Congregation of Rites. During the turmoil of the French supremacy in Europe, he lived from 1799 as a layman and traveled across Europe. He deepened his studies again. Short term he got captured by the French in 1798. It was not until 1814, he was able to return to the Curia.

The new Pope Pius VII appointed him Pro- Governor of Rome. In 1815 he was able to restore the papal rule in Bologna and established among other things, contact the local Archbishop Carlo Oppizzoni as Apostolic Delegate. On 21 December 1816 already 47 -year-old Giustiniani received the sacrament of Holy Orders. The very next year he became titular archbishop of Tyre. He received his episcopal consecration Cardinal Dean Alessandro Mattei in the Vatican Basilica. After the consecration Giustiniani served as Apostolic Nuncio in Spain. Due to liberal uprisings beginning in 1823 he had to flee to Bordeaux. It was only regained when King Ferdinand VII with French help his position, even Giacomo Giustiniani returned to Spain.

Pope Leo XII appointed him in 1826. Bishop of Imola ( personal title Archbishop ). In the consistory of 2 October 1826, he took it as a cardinal priest in the College of Cardinals. Cardinal Giustiniani was assigned the titular church of Santi Pietro e Marcellino. He took after the death of Leo XII. the conclave of 1829 part. In the next conclave rose Ferdinand VII of Spain because of previous diplomatic tensions appeal against a possible choice Giustiniani to the Pope. The then elected Gregory XVI. appointed him to the benefice of Farfa, which he remained until 1833. 1834 Cardinal Giustiniani was then Prefect of the Congregation of the Index. 1837 appointed him Gregory XVI. the Camerlengo, 1839, he took him into the class of cardinal bishops and showed him the bishopric of Albano suburbicarian to. 1843 Giacomo Giustiniani died at age 73, and was buried in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
