Giovanni Bertati

Giovanni Bertati (* July 10, 1735 in Martellago, † 1815 in Venice ) was an Italian librettist.

Bertati 1763 wrote his first libretto, La morte di Dimone ( " Dimon death " ), with music by Antonio Tozzi. Two years later, L' isola della fortuna ( " The Island of Happiness " ), listed based on Giovanni Bertati libretto and Andrea Luchesis music in Vienna. 1770 visited Bertati repeatedly Vienna, where he worked with Baldassare Galuppi. Emperor Leopold II granted him the title of Poeta Cesareo ( "Imperial Poet" ) of the Italian opera of Vienna, previously Lorenzo Da Ponte held, who was a year ago failed the Emperor in disgrace.

During his career as a librettist to Bertati devoted almost exclusively to writing drammi giocosi. His most famous Il matrimonio segreto libretto ( " The Secret Marriage " ) to music by Domenico Cimarosa, premiered on February 7, 1792 in Vienna.

Lorenzo Da Ponte took as his libretto for Mozart's Don Giovanni partly to Giovanni Bertati text.
