Givisiez (? Freiburg Patois Dzeveji / i ) is a municipality in the District de la Sarine ( German: Sarine district) of the Canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. The former German place name Seven Zach is no longer used today.

Geography

Givisiez is on 629 m above sea level. M., 3 km west-northwest of the capital of the canton of Fribourg (air line). The village extends slightly above the southern slope of the valley of the Ruisseau du Tiguelet, on the western outskirts of Freiburg, Freiburg Molassehügelland of the Central Plateau.

The area of ​​3.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Molassehöhen between the valleys of Sonnaz in the northwest and the Sarine in the southeast. The communal land extends from Forest Hills Bois de la Faye (666 m above sea level. M. ) southward across the broad, formerly marshy valley of the Ruisseau du Tiguelet (right side stream of Sonnaz ) to the adjacent level of the Bois de Moncor in which 696 m above sea level. Population

With 3043 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Givisiez belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Fribourg. Of the 73.1 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking and 14.5 % 2.7 % speak Italian ( as of 2000). The population of Givisiez amounted in 1850 to 151 residents in 1900 to 193 inhabitants. After a rapid increase in population to 1910 (450 inhabitants), the population went in the subsequent period back ( in 1940 298 inhabitants). Since then, a striking population growth was recorded, especially during the 1980s and 1990s.

Economy

Givisiez was up in the middle of the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture village. Since the 1950s, began a rapid development to the suburban community of Freiburg with huge commercial and industrial areas.

Today Givisiez offers around 3,400 jobs. History

The territory of Givisiez was inhabited in Roman times, what could be proven by the discovery of remains of a villa. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1142 under the name Juvinsie. As German versions Zivizach ( 1497 ), Ziffizachen ( 1578) and Sibenzach (1705 ) have survived. The etymology of the place name is not clear. Givisiez could be derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Juventius or Gavisius.

Givisiez was a fief of the lords of Estavayer, then those of Englisberg before it reached in 1290 by purchase into the possession of wealthy citizens from Freiburg in the Middle Ages. From the 15th century was responsible for the domination of the village Affry family. In the 15th century Givisiez came under the rule of Freiburg and the Old Landscape ( Neustadtpanner ) has been assigned. Until 1793, the neighboring village of Granges- Paccot belonged to the municipality Givisiez. Attractions

The parish church of Saint -Laurent goes back in essence to the 13th century. Its present form was given the Church the new building in 1777 and in the enlargement in 1936.
