Glenn Ferris

Glenn Arthur Ferris (* June 27, 1950 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz musician (trombone, composition).

Life and work

Ferris had from the age of 8 lessons on the trumpet, and from 1964 to 1967 in addition to Don Ellis private lessons in theory, improvisation and composition. Between 1968 and 1970 he studied at Los Angeles Valley College and then to 1972 at the California Institute of Arts. He was 1967-1970 Member of the Orchestra by Don Ellis ( most recently as Assistant Leader) and participated in the recording of important albums Goes Underground and Live at Fillmore. He then had a group with Jack Walrath, but also worked with George Duke and Buell Neidlinger (1973 ) and as a studio musician ( among others with Frank Zappa, the Beach Boys and Harry James ). He then played in the bands of Billy Cobham and Alphonse Mouzon in ( 1975-1978 ), but also joined White Band with John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Randy Brecker, Bobby Bradford, Buddy Miles, John Carter and the Average on. He retired in the late 1970s to New York City, where he worked with Milcho Leviev, James Newton and Art Pepper.

In 1980 he went to Paris, where he performed with his own groups, but also with Tony Scott, Mal Waldron, Steve Lacy and Barry Altschul played. He worked with Peter Schärli and toured with Henri Texier Azur Quartet and ensemble Palatino Paolo Fresu with Aldo Romano and also through central Europe. But he also took up with the Orchestre National de Jazz, with Buell Neidlinger or with Tim Berne. The mid-1990s, he recorded three albums for Enja with his trio ( Vincent Segal (cello) and Bruno Rousselet ( bass) ).

Currently Ferris works regularly in his own trio, quartet and quintet ensembles (some with Jean -Michel Cabrol, Philippe Milanta, Emmanuel Bex and Simon Goubert ), but also in a duo with Paul Breslin.

Due to the technical skills saw in 1974 Billy Cobham in him the best American trombonist. Mike Zwerin ruled 15 years later about him as "the most complete, most inspiring and most neglected trombonists of our time".
