Gliwice County

The powiat Gliwice is a powiat ( county ) in the Polish province of Silesia. The county has an area of 663 square kilometers with approximately 110,000 inhabitants. It is located west of the county town of Gliwice, however, does not belong to him.

For district includes 8 municipalities. 4 of these are communities rural communities, 2 townships and 2 Stadt-/Landgemeinden.

The county was established in its current form on 1 January 1999, after the Polish administration reform. The administrative headquarters of the district is located in Gliwice. Through the county the A4 motorway is.

Geography

The district is located in the Midwest of the Silesian Voivodeship and centrally located in Upper Silesia.

Through the circle area, the rivers flow Klodnitz and Drama and the Gliwice Canal.

The powiat Gliwicki borders the powiat tarnogórski, the city of Gliwice ( Gleiwitz ), the city of Zabrze ( Hindenburg OS), the powiat powiat Mikołowski, the city of Ruda Śląska, the city of Rybnik Rybnik powiat and the powiat Raciborski in Silesia, the powiat Strzelecki and the powiat Kędzierzyńsko - Kozielski in the Opole Voivodeship.

History

After the county Tost - Gleiwitz in 1945 came under Polish administration, he became the powiat Gliwice ( Gleiwitz circle ), its circular area was maintained. The county was henceforth in the Silesian Voivodeship. In 1950 he came to the resolution of the Silesian Voivodeship to Katowice Voivodeship. The community came Tworóg 1951 powiat tarnogórski. 1964 came Laband ( Łabędy ) and Schechowitz ( Czechowice ) for independent city of Gliwice. 1975 were dissolved in Poland and all counties instead of the county administration was transferred to the municipalities.

On 1 January 1999 arose after the administrative reform of the current powiat Gliwice in a slightly different form with two boroughs, two Stadt-/Landgemeinden and four rural communities in the newly established Silesian Voivodeship. County seat of the county was Gliwice again.

Religions

In the district there are both Catholic communities also have a number of Protestant churches and chapels. The powiat Gliwice is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Gliwice in the ecclesiastical province of Katowice and the Protestant diocese of Katowice.

Population Development

Of the 115 476 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2005 ) of the district of 64 862 people were living in a city and 50 614 in the country.

Coat of arms

The current coat of arms of Gliwice powiat consists of the golden eagle coat of arms of the Silesian Voivodeship and three white towers on blue background.

Until August 2006

A special feature in Upper Silesia, the Upper Silesian yellow eagle on a blue background, which is located in a large part of the Upper Silesian coat of arms on the left and right half. And so the eagle is also available on the coat of arms of the district of Gliwice as an exact copy of the Woiwodschaftsadlers. This is, however, not only on the left half but extends to the full width of the crest. Under it there is a hammer and an ear of corn, symbols of the importance of agriculture and coal mining in the district.

Natural Monuments

In the book " The most important natural monuments of Upper Silesia " from 1910 natural monuments are listed in 18 different places of the former county Tost - Gleiwitz. These include a pine with 3 meters in circumference at the Pheasantry in Tost ( Toszek ), a lime of 6.50 meters in circumference in Potemba in Dombrowka the " thickness Hanne ", a pine of 2.60 meters in circumference and a height of 36 meters, and Silva oak with a circumference of 5.50 meters.
