, Also known as Goiás Velho and earlier only Cidade de Goiás Goiás, is an old baroque city in the Brazilian state of Goiás in the mesoregion Northwest Goiás and in the micro- region of Rio Vermelho. It is located west of the Brazilian capital Brasília and Goiânia northwest of the capital. The distance to Brasilia via the radial federal highway BR -070 is about 300 km and about Goiânia on the state road GO- 070 about 150 km.

The municipal area of Goiás Velho are still the villages Buenolândia, Calcilândia, Davidópolis, São João and UVA.

Geography and climate

Goiás lies in hilly to mountainous area, nestled in the foothills of the famous Serra Dourada in Brazil, on the Rio Vermelho.

The climate is hot and humid. The vegetation is consequently very varied.

Approach

The city is located 149 km from Goiânia away at the BR-070/GO-070. Buses run regularly from Goiânia and Brasília.

History

In 1682 the area around the present town, which was then inhabited by Indians of the tribe of Goyaz was first visited by Europeans, particularly the Bandeirante Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva ( the " Anhangüera " ), and the in search of gold diamond was. As of 1727, the chapel of Santa Anna was built as the center of the resort of Vila de Sant'Anna, which was in 1732 renamed to the name Vila Boa de Goyaz. They got this name in honor of Erstbesuchers ( Bueno is a Spanish word, which means in Portuguese Bom / Boa ) and in honor of the natives. At the same time, the town also got its own administration and government, but remained among the Captaincy of São Paulo.

On 8 November 1744, the Gomarca de Goiaz was separated from São Paulo and the subsequent name Captaincy Geral. On September 17, 1818 Goiaz became a town and was capital of the province Goiaz.

On March 23, 1937, the seat of the State of Goiás was moved to Goiânia.

In 2001, the historic center of Goiás was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Economy

In addition to agriculture and animal husbandry, the extraction of natural resources ( gold, precious stones, lime, silver, sulfur, copper, etc. ) are of great importance.

Attractions

Approximately 90 % of the original colonial baroque architecture are preserved; the old city is since the fifties under monument protection. Goiás is therefore an image of the construction of the Brazil of the 18th century and the boom of gold mining. Besides, it is embedded in a very pretty landscape.

The city has 18 Catholic and ten Protestant churches, mostly baroque buildings that are interesting to visitors (including Igrejas da Boa Morte, Igreja de Santa Bárbara, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Igreja da Abadia, Igreja de São Francisco). In addition, there are several museums of religious art.

A special occasion to visit the city is during the week of Semana Santa ( Easter). The processions with torches and hooded figures.
