Nature Reserve, European bird sanctuary, biosphere reserve

The Goldensee is a polytropher lake within the biosphere reserve Schaalsee. The western shore is located in Schleswig -Holstein. The lake is accessible on the Mecklenburg side exclusively in the area of the local part Roggendorfer United Thurow. In this area there is both a land and a swimming area. On the lake fishing is possible only within a clearly defined area with valid chart, Boat fishing is prohibited. The south-western shore of the water body is forested. On the west side is the good Goldensee, today a district of Kittlitz.

Nature reserve

The Goldensee is designated as a nature reserve since 15 May 1990. The field condition is classified as satisfactory, since extensive nutrient inputs - including bog drainage adjoining land - pollute the water quality.

Green Belt

The nature reserve is due to the secluded location for several decades on the inner German border now part of the so-called Green Belt.
