Geography

The municipality is located in the High Görzke flaming in natural small park near the river Buckau, about 35 kilometers southwest of Brandenburg an der Havel. The western boundary of the municipality forms the border between Brandenburg and Saxony- Anhalt.

History

The first written mention of the town was in 1161 as Gorceke. The name comes from the Slavic period of Brandenburg, loud fishing village is on a mountain. Around 1250 Görzke became a town and was surrounded by a city wall. 1283 gave to the place its own jurisdiction and in 1285 the right to mint coins. Since 1680, the city belongs to the Brandenburg- Prussian Duchy of Magdeburg and was in what was then Jerichower circle.

Görzke has a long tradition as a Handwerkerort. 1706, the potters of the village joined together to form a guild and supplied the surrounding villages and towns with pottery. This tradition can be seen in the pottery market every year. This market always takes place on Easter Saturday and Sunday.
