Great Lakes Airlines, formerly Great Lakes Aviation, an American airline based in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the scheduled services and charter flights is operated. Its headquarters is located in the Cheyenne Regional Airport, with a hub in Denver ( Colorado), aircraft bases in Kansas City (Missouri ), Phoenix ( Arizona) and St. Louis ( Missouri). Main destinations are Albuquerque ( New Mexico) and Milwaukee (Wisconsin ).

History

The airline was founded in 1977 by Doug Voss and Ivan Simpson and began flight operations on 5 April 1977. The scheduled service began October 12, 1981 between Spencer, Iowa and Des Moines, Iowa. 1988 acquired the Great Lakes Alliance airlines with a route network around Lake Michigan.

In the following years the line network has been continuously expanded and 1992 was followed by a code share agreement with United Airlines. In 1994, the airline was registered as a public company on the NASDAQ. From October 1995 to 1997, the company flew under the colors of Midway Connection. The collaboration was then downgraded to a code share agreement and as of 21 May 2001, the airline was again independent.

The State of Wyoming based Great Lakes to a large degree because the airline had approached the only six of the ten business airports in Wyoming. Great Lakes eventually took over the routes from seven airports in Montana to Billings Big Sky Airlines. These routes are subsidized by the state as part of the Essential Air Service program.
