The club was founded in 1878 as one of the first British football clubs. As in 1892 with the Football League Second Division a second professional league was founded, Grimsby Town was one of the founding members. First time in 1901 succeeded in rising to the first division, from which one had to descend, however, already after two years. 1910 had the club after the former re-election process, the Football League even completely abandoned, but was able to return a year later. Since then, played the Mariners, as the club is also known, mostly in the lower regions of the English professional football. Only from 1929 to 1932 and from 1934 to 1948 succeeded once again the leap into excellence. In 1935 they reached fifth place in the first division the best result to date. Even otherwise, the 1930s were the most successful for the club: 1936 ( 0-1 at Huddersfield against Arsenal ) and 1939 ( 0-5 at Old Trafford against Wolverhampton Wanderers ) the semi-finals in the FA Cup was achieved in each case and the 31 657 spectators who flocked to the FA Cup match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 20 February 1937 in the Blundell Park, are still a club record.

After completion of the 2009/10 season Grimsby Town relegated from the Football League Two fourth-rate and thus adopted for the first time after almost 100 years of the game operation of the Football League. Since then, the club is in the fifth highest division, the Conference National, active.
