History

Grömitz is already since 1813 and one of the oldest seaside resort on the Baltic Sea. The place offers except the church from the 12th century, no historical sites, which are still visible recognizable.

The place name Grömitz evolved from the westslavischen name of a stream. The small town Grömitz played at the time of Christianization an important role - Groebeniz ( so called Grömitz at the time ) was a fortified with a rampart village, of which today there is nothing left ( the attachment was mostly made of wood). Later, the weir was moved to Oldenburg in Holstein. Unlike Grömitz still remnants of this rampart can be seen there today. An existing in Oldenburg Museum provides an overview of the former importance.

Church

As part of the proselytizing of the Wends in 1230 the Nicholas of Myra consecrated church was built. 1259 it is mentioned in the list of the bishopric of Lübeck belonging to churches for the first time. At this time Grömitz belonged to the Knights of Westensee which it sold in 1323 to the Benedictine monastery Cismar. While single-aisled rectangular nave and the box-shaped choir were built in the 13th century from boulders, the massive tower was added in brick in the 15th century, when Grömitz had received city rights.

The Cismar, located in the municipality today, introduced the Reformation in 1560 Grömitz an important place of pilgrimage for the people of Northern Europe is by Johannes Heil source and Blood of Christ relic. The spiritual significance of the monastery can also still suspect in the Danish State Library, which is home to many significant works that were originally derived from the Cismar. In a wing of the partially preserved monastery is a branch of the Schleswig -Holstein State Museum.

Port

Little known is the fact that Grömitz already in 1400 had a seagoing port and a brisk trade with ports situated on the Trave led. Lübeck, Travemünde, Oldesloe and Danish cities were among the main trading centers Grömitzer ships. The port was favored by natural sand banks as the Walkyriengrund. The harbor silted up in the 17th century, making the long-distance trade lost in importance again. Mid-1960s, was built a modern marina, which is now one of the largest and most important marinas of the Baltic Sea.

The twelve kilometers southwest location neighboring town of Neustadt is closely linked to the economic history of Grömitz. As early as the Hanseatic period presented, the port of Neustadt an important and interesting port of call for Dutch and Danish ships dar. ships of the Hanseatic League ( Universos mercatores de hansa Theutonicorum ) ran the Neustadt port only rarely because Neustadt was not part of the Hanseatic League, but had lübsches law. This made the city for Dutch merchantmen and also for the Vitalienbrüder the more interesting because there are no stack rights were observed. The main sources of income of small villages like Grömitz were agriculture ( supported by the Cismar ) and fishing. Thus even small towns like Grömitz made a modest share of one of the main items of trade of the Hanseatic League - salted herring in barrels which have been exported from the Neustadt port.
