Grumman FF

The Grumman FF was a two-seat biplane of the U.S. aircraft manufacturer Grumman, which was produced in the early 1930s for the United States Navy as a fighter and reconnaissance aircraft.

FF -1

The FF -1 ( Model G.5 ) was provided as a fighter for the use of aircraft carriers. The FF -1 was the first developed by Grumman Aircraft and also the first pattern used by the U.S. Navy with retractable landing gear. The first flight of the prototype XFF -1 ( original in-house designation HPTSF then referred to as Model G-5 as the serial version) took place on 29 December 1931. The first production aircraft were delivered from April 1933 and from June the squadron VF- 5B ( " Red Rippers " ) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Lexington ( CV-2 ) stationed. The biggest shortcoming of the said by the pilots " Fifi " aircraft was the extremely poor climbing ability.

The Canadian Car & Foundry GE -23 Goblin is the Canadian license production of the Grumman FF -1.

FF -2

Once in March 1936 all FF -1 were subtracted from the active fleet units, the remaining 25 copies were (according to other sources, 22 pieces ) transferred to the Naval Aircraft Factory. There by the aircraft now known as FF- 2, a second control unit has been installed so that they could continue to be used as a training aircraft in the reserve of the U.S. Navy until 1942.

SF-1

From the Enlightenment version of SF-1 (Model G.6 ) 35 units were built and with the squadron VS- 3B ( " Scouting Three" ) is also stationed on the aircraft carrier Lexington. They were equipped slightly differently and had a different engine ( Wright R -1820 -84).

Export version

The export version of the FF -1 was the Model GE.23 with a 800 hp R -1820 - payable F52 as a drive. In Spain 23 of which were delivered and designated as dolphin. From Canadian Car & Foundry 15 pieces for the RCAF were mounted and used there as Goblin until they are replaced by the Curtiss Kittyhawk. A single copy was delivered to Nicaragua. From there, it was after a long stoppage in 1966 bought back and restored by Grumman Aircraft. Then the restored aircraft was handed over to the U.S. Navy and is today at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola issued.

In 1937, 40 aircraft of this type were to be delivered to Turkey. The machines were, however during transport in the hands of the Spanish Republican forces and were used by them in the Spanish Civil War.
