Gülnar

Gülnar is the name of a district town and a district in the Turkish province of Mersin. The district is located in the south of the province and is bordered to the north by Karaman. The city has 8,078 and the county 28 551 inhabitants ( 2010).

The former Gilindere ( Kelenderis ) and today Aydıncık was named by Gülnar. Gülnar was established in 1867 and relocated in 1916. In addition to the city Gülnar there are four more municipalities ( Büyükeceli, Köseçobanlı, Kuskan and Zeyne ) and 41 villages.

Right on the Mediterranean Sea, about 100 km southwest of the provincial capital of Mersin and south of the small town Büyükeceli is Akkuyu. The Turkish government approved in 1976 the construction of a nuclear power plant.

Akkuyu located near a meeting place of many tectonic plates ( Anatolian plate, Arabian plate, African plate and the Eurasian plate ). Therefore, this project reaps long been a lot of criticism; . fortiori since the devastating earthquake in Japan and the nuclear disaster at Fukushima in March 2011 2008 were planned a capacity of 3000 - 5000 MW, so probably three or four nuclear reactors.

Attractions

About eight kilometers southeast of Gülnar situated on a rocky spur, the ruins of the ancient fortress of Meydancıkkale.
