Harry Gandy

Harry Luther Gandy ( born August 13, 1881 in Churubusco, Whitley County, Indiana; † August 15, 1957 in Los Gatos, California ) was an American politician. Between 1915 and 1921 he represented the third electoral district of the state of South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and political rise

Harry Gandy attended the public schools of his home and thereafter until 1901, the Tri - State College in Angola ( Indiana). In 1907 he moved to Rapid City in South Dakota. Between 1910 and 1918 he published the newspaper " Wasta Gazette". Between 1910 and 1945 he was also the owner of a ranch where he ran cattle. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1911, Gandy was elected to the Senate of South Dakota. 1913 President Woodrow Wilson appointed him to a post in the financial management of the Country Office in Rapid City.

Gandy in Congress

1914 Gandy was elected in what was then the third constituency of South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he broke on March 4, 1915 Eben Martin. After several re- elections he could implement his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1921. For the 1920 elections, he was defeated by Republican William Williamson. Gandy was the second of three deputies of the third electoral district of South Dakota, consisting of only 1913-1933.

After the end of his time in Congress to re Gandy devoted his private transactions, in particular agriculture and his ranch. But the same time he has held various other offices. From 1923 to 1930 he was CEO of the National Coal Association, based in Washington. In the 1930s, he had numerous business connections with the coal industry. He was from 1937 to 1940 chairman of the Bituminous Coal Producers in Cincinnati. Gandy was also on the board of the Elk River Coal & Lumber Company, and since 1944 at the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad Company in West Virginia. He spent his life in Los Gatos, California, where he died in 1957. He was buried in Rapid City.
