Freeman Knowles

Freeman Tulley Knowles ( born October 10, 1846 in Harmony, Somerset County, Maine; † 1 June 1910 in Deadwood, South Dakota ) was an American politician. Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the second electoral district of the state of South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and career

Freeman Knowles attended the Bloomfield Academy in Skowhegan (Maine). During the Civil War he served 1862-1865 in the army of the Union. After the war he moved to Denison, Iowa. After studying law and his 1869 was admitted as a lawyer in this city he began to work in his new profession. In 1886 he moved to Nebraska, where he edited newspapers in some cities. Finally, he moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, where he moved the newspaper "Evening Independent".

Political career

Knowles was a member of in the 1880s and 1890s relatively successful Populist Party, which later became the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1896 Knowles was chosen as the candidate of the populists in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he took over from Robert J. Gamble of the Republican Party on March 4, 1897. Knowles exercised its mandate in Congress from only one legislative period is long; then took over on March 4, 1899 Robert Gamble again the seat for the second constituency of South Dakota. After the end of his time in the federal capital Washington Freeman Knowles devoted again to the newspaper business in Deadwood. In this city he has also died in 1910.
