William V. Lucas

William Vincent Lucas ( * July 3, 1835 in Delphi, Carroll County, Indiana, † November 10, 1921 in Santa Cruz, California ) was an American politician. Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the second electoral district of the state of South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and political rise

William Lucas attended the public schools of his home. In 1856 he moved to the Bremer County, Iowa, where he worked in agriculture. During the Civil War, he brought it to an infantry regiment from Iowa to the captain. After the war he was treasurer from 1866 to 1872 in Bremer County. Then he went into the newspaper business and was 1872-1876, the newspaper " Waverly Republican " and from 1876 to 1883 out of the " Cerro Gordo Republican ". From 1878 to 1880 was Lucas clerk in the House of Representatives from Iowa. In 1879 and 1880 he was mayor of Mason City. Finally, he served from 1881 to 1882 as head of the Court (State Auditor ) of Iowa. Politically, he had joined the Republicans.

Congressman

In 1883, William Lucas moved to Chamberlain in the Dakota Territory, where he worked in agriculture. From 1888 to 1890 he was treasurer in Brule County. In 1890 he moved to Hot Springs, also in South Dakota. In the congressional elections of 1892, he was elected in the U.S. House of Representatives, succeeding John L. Jolley. There he represented between 4 March 1893 to 3 March 1895 a legislative period the second district of South Dakota. For the elections of 1894 he was not nominated by his party.

1896 Lucas was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, was nominated on the William McKinley Presidential candidate of the party. After his return to Chamberlain William Lucas was employed by the federal land authority as land registry officials. This office he held from 1897-1901. In 1904, he moved to Santa Cruz in California, where he spent his twilight years. There he also died in 1921. William Lucas was married to Amanda L. Lucas.
