Henry G. Blasdel

Henry Goode Blasdel (* January 29, 1825 in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn County, Indiana; † July 22, 1900 in Oakland, California ) was an American politician and the first governor of the new State of Nevada.

Early years and political rise

Henry Blasdel attended the local schools of his home. He worked in the mining industry, as a farmer, shop owner and the captain of a river steamer, before moving to Nevada in 1859. Blasdel was a member of the Republican Party. In 1862 he was elected in Storey County to the town judge and in 1864 as the candidate of his party for the first governor of Nevada.

Governor of Nevada

Blasdel took up his new post on December 5, 1864. After a re-election in 1866, he could remain in office until January 2, 1871. During this time, had in Nevada first and foremost a functional apparatus of government to be established. Even with the plans for the construction of the Capitol was begun. In his reign Blasdel had to deal with an Indian uprising.

After the end of his time as governor to Blasdel withdrew from politics. In 1891 he moved to California. He is also passed in 1900. Henry Blasdel was married to Sara Jane Cox, with whom he had three children.
