Many let themselves be inspired by or attacked directly back to his motives of Tolkien. Thus, as the authors Raymond Feist, Terry Brooks and Tad Williams see in the tradition of Tolkien; other authors such as Ursula K. Le Guin, Steven Erikson and George RR Martin on the other hand use Tolkien groundwork for an independent processing of the classical motifs.

As a precursor of Tolkien's works can Lewis Carroll's Alice 's Adventures in Wonderland ( 1865), William Morris ' The Well at the World 's End (1896) and The Wood Beyond the World ( 1894), George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind (1871 ), and The Princess and the Goblin (1872 ) and TH White's The Once and Future King ( 1936) are considered.
