For the construction of the railway also the site of Marie cemetery opened until 1832 was raised. After the construction of the Hanoverian Southern Railway cross the railway was extended to North Station Mortising on the Southern Railway on 15 September 1853. The station building of the first Hildesheim main station was a half-timbered building with a slate roof.

The Hannover- Altenbekener Railway Company (HAE ) planned to build a railway from wages by Vienenburg, which should lead you through Hildesheim. Since they became insolvent before the completion of this route, took over the Magdeburg- Halberstadt Railway Company ( MHE ) the continued construction and operation management of HAE and opened on May 19, 1875, the track that was built further on 1 May 1883 by the Brunswick train to Goslar.

For the additional traffic the HAE moved an additional track of Nordstemmen to Hildesheim, but they first had a temporary railway station, the station later Hildesheim Ost build, since they could not use the state railway station. Only after the nationalization of HAE and its parent company MHE stopped the trains from 20 May 1880 in the state railway station.

The station was already too small without the extra traffic, and so was reached after long negotiations - the train wanted to keep the old location, the city wanted to build new north - and after a long planning of the new central station under Mayor Gustav Struck man at the present installed location and opened there on May 6, 1884. For this purpose, the railway line had been moved to the north. The station building was designed by Hubert bull in the style of Neo - Renaissance. A tunnel was associated with a wide island platform on which a waiting room and a restaurant were built. The old station building was demolished and rebuilt in Dissen -Bad Rothenfelde again, where it still stands today.

In 1888 the single-track railway line was opened by Brunswick in operation, take the long-distance trains heading east to Magdeburg and Berlin. The regional traffic this route and in 1901 opened way to Bad Salzdetfurth ended on the island Ostkopf the platform, on the present tracks 14 and 15, 1909, added a further passage platform for tracks 6 and 7.

The passenger trains, which opened in 1896 Hildesheim district Peine Railway Company ended up terminating in 1964 in Hildesheim Hauptbahnhof.

Although the reception building was only slightly damaged during the bombing raid on Hildesheim on 22 March 1945 it was demolished in 1959. Only in 1961 was awarded the station a new reception building in the functional style of the time. The buildings on the island platform were then eliminated.

On March 26, 2006, a new electronic interlocking went to the control of the Railway Junction Hildesheim in operation. It controls next to the main train station 12 km adjacent sections. With an investment of 52 million euros seven 60 -year-old signal boxes were replaced. With built in this framework, the new course extension and compression was increased to the remote tracks of the main railway station 40 km / h to 80 km / h.
