Hope, New Zealand

Hope is a village in the Tasman region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located in the alluvium of the Waimea River on State Highway 6, approximately 3 km southwest of Richmond and 21 miles south-west Nelson. Neighboring towns are Richmond in the northeast and Brightwater 6.5 km to the southeast. Between Hope and Richmond branches of State Highway 60 towards Motueka and Collingwood to the north.

Naming

The place was named by the German settlers after the funder of colonization, Count Kuno of Rantzau width castle, Ranzau. Later, it was the place when Jane Hope, a granddaughter of the Duke of Hamilton, here acquired lands, renamed Hope.

History

The place is a funded by a Count Ranzau settlement under the auspices of the New Zealand Company back through German. This came in 1843 with the ship Skjold to New Zealand. From this period are grave stones in the cemetery of St John 's Church, as also get street names such as the Ranzau Road.

From the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, the house 16 Aniseed Valley Road is registered as a historic landmark.
