Horace Ashenfelter

Horace Ashenfelter III ( born January 23, 1923 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania ) is a former American track and field athlete and Olympic champion.

After military service during World War II and graduating from the Pennsylvania State University Ashenfelter took from 1947 to 1956 in international athletics competitions in part. Overall, he won 15 AAU titles and three college championship.

Although the extended circle of favorites he scored in the 1952 Olympics, so Ashenfelters victory in the 3000 meters steeplechase was rather surprising. He won ahead of Russia's Vladimir Kazantsev and thereby improved his world record.

At a height of 1.78 meters his competition weight was 66 kilograms. Ashenfelter worked throughout his career with the FBI, after 1956 he moved to the metallurgy industry. Today Ashenfelter is retired and lives in New Jersey. The indoor track and field facility at Pennsylvania State University is named after him.
