House of Borgia

The Borgia ( Italian) or Borja (Spanish and Valencian ) were a from Spain (more precisely, the present-day Valencia Autonomous Region) derived noble family.

Origin

The Borgias come from the Kingdom of Valencia, in the south of the Confederation of the Crown of Aragon, especially from Valencia and Xativa. The family arrived at the beginning of the 15th century in Italy to power and wealth, especially by the two popes of the family, Calixtus III. (1455-1458) and Alexander VI. (1492-1503), which have become the epitome of nepotism. The celebrated by Machiavelli, Cesare Borgia and the long time maligned Lucrezia Borgia, illegitimate children of the latter pope, are two of the most famous people in the Renaissance. With the death of Alexander VI. 1503 broke the power of the Borgias together. Giambattista Pamphili, a descendant of Alexander's daughter Isabella, in 1644 as Innocent X Pope.

The line of the Dukes of Gandia died but only from 1748. One of them was Francisco de Borja, the third general of the Jesuits. The Prince of Squillace are also descendants of the Borgia. A number of families who now bears that name, as Borgia de Milà and Borgia Lançol, descended from daughters of the family.
