Iranian presidential election, 1989

The 1989 presidential elections in Iran were held on 28 July 1989 and made Alī Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani as president.

Prehistory

On June 3, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini died in 1989 with the jurist-ruler of Iran and the symbolic figure of the Islamic revolution. One of the two candidates was approved Rafsanjani, who was traded to the much lesser known Abbas Sheibani as a big favorite.

Result

The election ended as expected with a clear victory for Rafsanjani. Of 16,452,677 votes cast, he received 15,550,528.

Rafsanjani began his first term and was re-elected in the presidential election in 1993.
