Izieu

Izieu is a commune with 201 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ain ​​, in the Rhône -Alpes. It belongs administratively to the Arrondissement Belley Canton Belley and of the same name.

Geography

The municipality is bordered to the north by Prémeyzel, to the east by Peyrieu and Murs- et- Gélignieux and in the south and to the west by Brégnier cordon. In the south, the Rhone forms the municipal boundary. The village center is 3 kilometers away from the river. The district municipality is involved in the approved Rebflechen of Vin du Bugey.

History

La Maison d' Izieu is the name given to an orphanage that housed 44 Jewish orphans and half-orphans. These were abducted on April 6, 1944 on the orders of Klaus Barbie. Following an initiative by Beate Klarsfeld the late eighties, a memorial was erected in Izieu.
