Virieu-le-Grand
Virieu -le- Grand is a commune with 1174 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ain , in the Rhône -Alpes. It is capital of the canton Virieu -le- Grand in Belley and belongs since 1994 to the Association of Municipalities Bugey - Arêne - furan.
Geography
The community is located ten kilometers north of Belley in Bugey in the southern foothills of the Jura. The village lies in the valley of the Arêne, a tributary of the furan, at the foot of the mountains Grande Montagne de Virieu ( 1056 m) and Montagne de Sérémond ( 1040 m).
Next to the village Virieu -le- Grand, the municipality also includes the villages of Le Murat and Mussignin. There is a station on the railway line Lyon -Genève.
History
Virieu -le- Grand in 1077 came to the County of Savoy. The Treaty of Lyon then went the Bugey 1601 France about.
The Castle of Virieu -le- Grand was built on the site of a former Roman temple in 1077 by Count Amadeus II of Savoy. The castle was expanded several times: in 1250 by Boniface of Savoy, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1441 of Duke Louis of Savoy, and in 1636 by the Marquis de Lévis Chateau Morand (Family d' Urfé ). The castle was burnt down on 18 April 1726 and was never rebuilt.
