Champagne-en-Valromey

Champagne -en- Valromey is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes. It is the capital of the Canton of Champagne -en- Valromey the arrondissement Belley and seat of the municipal association Valromey.

Geography

Champagne -en- Valromey is located on 530 m above sea level. Level, about 17 kilometers north of the town of Belley (air line). The village is located in the southeastern Bugey, a scenic location on a sloping plateau to the south in the valley of Valromey, between the mountain ranges of the plan agate in the west and the Grand Colombier in the east.

History

The territory of Champagne -en- Valromey was already inhabited during the Roman period, which could be based on various findings, including wall foundations of a country house at Ossy detected.

Is first mentioned in the 11th century Champagne. It was in the 12th century the site of a small priory and formed its own government, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy. Effective as of January 1, 1973 merged the previously independent municipalities Passin and Lilignod with Champagne -en- Valromey.

Attractions

The parish church of Champagne -en- Valromey was rebuilt in 1872-1876. In the old town numerous characteristic houses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved.
