James Counsilman

James Edward "Doc" Counsilman ( * 1920 in Birmingham, Alabama, † 2004 in Bloomington, Indiana) was an American physiologist and swimming coach.

He holds a doctorate physiologist was from 1958 to 1990 Head Coach of Men's swim team at Indiana University (USA).

He was also head coach of the two most successful to date, the U.S. men's teams at the Olympics in swimming ( in Tokyo in 1964 and 1976 in Montreal). In Tokyo in 1964 won his Olympic Team 7 out of 10 possible gold medals in the men's. At the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976 his team won 12 of 13 possible gold medals in the men. His swim team at Indiana University from 1968 to 1973 won six times in a row the championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA).

Dr. James E. Counsilman is considered one of the pioneers in the field of scientific development efficient swimming techniques and innovative training methods. His science-based book The Science of Swimming ( The science of swimming ) was published in 1968 and received worldwide recognition among swimming instructors. The book is considered a classic of the literature on swimming training.

He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1976.

"Doc" Counsilman coached at Indiana University, among others High performance swimmers such as Mark Spitz, James Montgomery, Michael Troy, Charles Hickcox, Donald McKenzie, Gary Hall Sr., John Kinsella, Chet Jastremski, Mike trunk, Ted Stickles, John Murphy, Fred Tyler, Alan Somers and Tom Stock. At the State University of New York at Cortland, he coached in the 1950s, long-distance swimmer George Breen.
