Jim Montgomery (swimmer)

James Paul "Jim" Montgomery ( born January 24, 1955 in Madison, Wisconsin ) is a retired American swimmer.

He was the first swimmer who swam the 100m freestyle under 50 seconds ( 49.99 ).

Montgomery was at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Olympic champion in the 100 m freestyle ( 49.99 ) and with the two squadrons of the United States about 4 × 100 m and 4 × 200 m freestyle. In 1973, he had already become world champion over 100 m and 200 m freestyle in Belgrade. From 1973 to 1977 Montgomery Student at Indiana University where he was trained under coach James Counsilman.

Jim Montgomery swam a total of 11 world records, seven of them in Season disciplines.

In 1986 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international swimming sport.
