Jan Kappeyne van de Coppello

Joannes (Jan ) van de Kappeyne Coppello ( born October 2, 1822 in The Hague, † July 28, 1895 ) was a Dutch statesman.

He studied in Leiden and then practiced as a lawyer in The Hague. As a member of the Second Chamber, he was a member of the Liberal Party, whose leader, he was also recognized soon.

When, in August 1874 occurred the conservative Ministry Heemskerk, it was the influence to thank primarily Kappeynes that the Liberal party, which the board had a majority, the Cabinet supported as long as the same was moving in liberal lines. However, when the end of 1877 Heemskerk was looking at his position untenable, Kappeyne was asked to form a new cabinet. During his administration, the public school law was adopted by the chambers, on the other hand rejected his channel bill, and gave as his call for a constitutional revision especially in the crown with fierce resistance, he took his dismissal in 1879. From 1888 to 1893 he was a member of the First Chamber.

He has made numerous Aussätze and treatises, which are almost exclusively published the magazine " Themis " as a legal writer a name. Appeared in German translation " essays on Roman public and private law " (Stuttgart 1855).
