Janusz Sidło

Janusz sídlo, born Reinhold sídlo ( born June 19, 1933 Szopienice; † August 2, 1993 in Warsaw) was a Polish athlete who scored in the 50s and 60s of the 20th century the world's best in the javelin. He threw a world record and participated in five Olympic Games and five European championships.

Career

His interest in javelin throwing began when in 1948 the Russian pentathlete Alexandra Tschudina threw the javelin 44 meters wide. The 15 -year-old Janusz claimed he could excel with a male peer this expanse. No sooner said than done -: The spear ended up at 46 m.

His first international appearance at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki already ended in qualifying. With 62.16 meters he missed the required 64 m significantly. Angry at his failure, he threw the spear by itself - and reached a length just below the 70 - m mark. In the following years there was a power explosion. In October 1953 an international match Poland - GDR took place in Jena. Janusz sídlo whose best performance was below 70 m, increased on the 2nd attempt to 77,52 m and wanted to believe, to have exhausted its possibilities on this day, finish the event. A cameraman, however, the wanted to film him and asked for another throw. Sídlo did him the favor and exceeded as the second pitcher in the world, the 80 - m mark. With 80.41 meters he remained only whole 26 inches below the existing world record. At the European Championships in Bern the following year he was his role as favorite and won the gold medal.

In the Olympic year 1956 everything pointed at winning another gold medal after Janusz sídlo had thrown in Milan with 83.66 m world record. However, he was allowed to enjoy only five months of this performance. Ironically, in the Olympic final fight him improved Egil Danielsen with a lucky throw - the second-best effort of the Unknown Norwegian was measured with 72.60 m - 85.71 m on while sídlo with exquisite 79,98 m "only" the silver medal remained. Two years later, however, he managed to Revenge: The European Champion of Stockholm called Janusz sídlo.

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he threw 85.14 meters in the qualification and thus remained only slightly below the world record. But then he was hit by the spear of a competitor almost in the face. Sídlo was so shocked that he remained below its potential in the further course of the competition and only was eighth.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 and 1968 in Mexico City throws him reach over 80 m, although not enough for a medal.

His last medal he won surprisingly at the European Athletics Championships in 1969 in Athens. There, he managed a throw of 82.90 meters, which brought the 36 -year-olds in 3rd place.

Janusz sídlo was a Polish athlete of the year in 1954 and 1955. Upon completion of his active career he became a coach. In later years he had heart problems; Also water was found in the lungs. From an operation he could not recover.
