Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force

Marine Self-Defense Forces (Japanese海上 自卫队, Kaijo Jieitai, Eng. Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, abbreviated JMSDF ) are the de facto navy of Japan and the maritime branch of the Self-Defense Forces. They are the successors of the Imperial Japanese Navy, which was disbanded after the defeat of the Japanese Empire in the Pacific War.

The JMSDF are about 44,000 men strong and have an approved ceiling of 46,000 soldiers. Their focus is on the U- hunt.

Order

The mission of the Marine Self-Defense Forces is to protect the territorial integrity of the Japanese coastal waters and is determined by the insularity of the country and the dependency on natural mineral resources. Therefore, the main task of the JMSDF, deter an invasion and to be able to fight this in an emergency. However, they should contribute in the context of international relations to a peaceful coexistence possible.

  • Two helicopter carrier (Helicopter Destroyer ) of the Izumo - class - The Izumo ( DDH -183 ) is in testing and another unit in planning
  • Two anti-submarine destroyer of 25DD -Class - is provided in planning, commissioning for March 2018 and 2019
  • Five submarines of the Soryu -Class - Kokuryu (SS- 506) is in testing the commissioning is planned for March 2015, two more units are under construction and two other construction is planned
  • A coastal minesweeper of Enoshima -Class - Hatsushima (MSC -606 ) is in testing, commissioning planned for March 2015
  • Two ocean minesweepers of 25MSO class - is provided in planning, commissioning for March 2017 and 2018
  • A submarine rescue ship - is in the planning
