Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch

Johan Hendrik Chalking ( born November 30, 1824 in The Hague as Hendrik Johannes Weiss break; † March 14, 1903 ) was a painter from the Netherlands.

Life

Chalking was interested as a boy to painting. He enjoyed drawing lessons from the Hague artist JJ Loew; 1843-1850 he attended the Art Academy. One of his teachers there was Andreas Schelfhout. Above all, he admired Jacob van Ruisdael clouds games that he could study in the Hague Mauritshuis. Together with his nephew Jan, Willem Roelofs and he was the founder of the artists' circle Pulchri Studio. His paintings are those of Andreas Schelfhout initially quite similar. Above all, he painted dark, cloudy skies; fracture in white works, it is not uncommon that the horizon is only a quarter of the height of the whole painting. After 1870 his style became looser. Many critics believe that stress whitening in the last 20 years of his life reached its artistic peak. General stress whitening is considered as one of the painters of the Hague School. White breakdown work was very popular since 1876 in Canada. In 1897 there were in Montreal a major exhibition of his works. As recently as 1900 he attended the French village of Barbizon artists.
