Johan Olof Wallin

Johan Olof Wallin (* October 15, 1779 in Stora Tuna, Dalarna (now the Municipality of Borlänge), † June 30, 1839 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish poet and Lutheran clergyman ( last Archbishop of Uppsala ).

Life

Wallin studied Protestant theology in 1799 at the University of Uppsala. In 1803 he became the Dr. phil. his doctorate in 1806 and ordained. In the same year he was adjunct to the cadet school at Karlberg Castle, where he was in 1809 promoted to the castle preacher and lecturer. At the same time he became pastor in Solna and received a doctorate in theology. In 1812 he received the pastorate at the Adolf Fredrik Church, Stockholm. In 1816 he was provost in Västerås, but returned in 1818 returned to Stockholm, where he was senior pastor at St. Nicholas' Church ( " Storkyrkan "). In 1837 he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala and served until his death as the highest dignitaries of the Church of Sweden.

Work and significance

Wallins theological significance remains far behind the as a poet. Already during his studies Wallin published his first poems. From 1803 he has been awarded several times for his translations (eg of Horace and Virgil ) and seals of the Svenska academies. In 1810 he was admitted even in the Swedish Academy ( Chair 1), 1826 in the Kungliga och Vitterhets History Antikvitets academies and 1827 in the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Beginning to classic form language endeavor he was increasingly influenced by Romanticism. Among his secular poems, the completed shortly before his death Dödens Ängel ( Angel of Death ) counts as the most important.

However, the greatest importance was Wallin as hymn writer. In 1811 he was appointed to the committee to make a revision of the measure in official use since 1695 hymnbook. When the committee presented its draft 1814, Wallin was not satisfied. He presented a draft, which the. , With slight modifications by King Charles XIII was approved and was from 1819 to 1937, the official hymnal of the Swedish Church. The hymnal was commonly called " Walli cal Hymns " because of the 500 songs he had 128 self- sealed, 23 translated and edited 178. The current Swedish hymn book from 1986 contains 76 hymns Wallins.

Wallin was very popular as a preacher. After he had held in 1816 at the first meeting of the Swedish Bible Society is a plea for the mission (Christianity), he was involved in the 1835 founding of the first missionary society in Sweden.
