John Clark (musician)

John Trevor Clark ( born September 21, 1944 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American jazz musician (French horn, composition).

Life and work

John Clark grew up in Rochester (New York). The son of a German studies initially pursued a philological career and studied Spanish at the University of Rochester (Bachelor 1966). But next horn studied with Verne Reynolds at the Eastman School of Music. Between 1967 and 1971 he did his military service in the United States Coast Guard band to then to study composition and improvisation with Jaki Byard, Ran Blake and George Russell at New England Conservatory of Music.

Clark was then a member of the band of Carla Bley and many years in Gil Evans Monday Night Orchestra and George Russell busy. Since 1985 he has played with the New York City Ballet Orchestra, since 1993 at Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra. He was still active as a studio musician. He has worked with such diverse musicians such as Glen Velez, Anthony Jackson, Linda Ronstadt, BB King, Oliver Lake, Ornette Coleman, Sting, Joni Mitchell, Leroy Jenkins, Gerry Mulligan, Isaac Hayes, Grachan Moncur, Ashford & Simpson, Pat Metheny, Frank Sinatra, John Scofield, Spyro Gyra, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, LL Cool J, Joe Lovano, Jaco Pastorius, Rachel Z, Jimmy Heath, Johnny Griffin, Toots Thielemans, Billy Joel, the Fugees, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Currently (2009) he played in the Mingus Big Band and the trio B3

His compositions have been recorded by Pugh -Taylor Project (" 747 " ), the Gil Evans Orchestra (" Groove from the Louvre ", " Your Number ", Grammy, 1989), the Paul Winter Consort, ( " Bedrock Cathedral" ) and Imani Winds ( "I Will "). He has also written for Bob Stewart, McCoy Tyner, the Turtle Iceland String Quartet, Paul Jeffrey and the Aspen Wind Quintet.

Clark developed the Hornette that he was also patented in 1991. In 1993 he published his textbook Exercises for Jazz French Horn. From 2001 to 2008 he taught at the State University of New York.
