John Whetton

John Whetton ( born September 6, 1941 in Mansfield) is a former British middle distance runner who specialized in the 1500 meters distance.

In 1963 he won first time at the indoor championship of the AAA in the mile run. Until 1968, he won six titles hall on the mile or 1500 m. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 Whetton was in 3:42,4 min aft above 1,500 meters. In the 1966 inaugural European Indoor Games in Dortmund, he won over 1500 meters with three seconds ahead. Outdoors in 1966 but he could not qualify for the European Championships in Budapest nor for the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston.

At the European Indoor Games 1967 in Prague, he won with almost a second ahead of Josef Odložil. Also in 1968 in Madrid, he won at the hall games. In that year he also won his only outdoor title at the AAA Championship. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he was fifth in 3:43,8 minutes on the winner of the bronze medal Bodo porpoises however, he had four seconds behind.

In Athens at the European Championships 1969, Whetton erlief his only major outdoor title. In 3:39,4 min he defeated in the final sprint to the Irish Frank Murphy, to whom he had just lost in the AAA Championship. 1970 Whetton was starting for England, fifth at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

John Whetton is 1.79 m and weighed 68 kg in his playing days.
