Johnny Almond

Johnny Almond ( born July 20, 1946 at the London Borough of Enfield, Middlesex, England; † November 18, 2009, in Hayward ( California)) was a British multi-instrumentalist, who was known by his band member of John Mayall and Mark - Almond, where he has played, among others, baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone, alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute, alto flute, bass flute, Hammond organ and vibraphone.

Life and work

As the son of a drummer Johnny Almond of the music preferences of his father ( 1940s - jazz of Benny Goodman and Woody Herman) was affected. His own music education began with Almond alto saxophone, later followed tenor saxophone, flute, keyboards, vibraphone as other instruments.

In the field of jazz music Almond especially admired modern jazz musician Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Yusef Laatef, Roland Kirk and Woody Herman. Even as an adolescent, Almond founded an own jazz band. He later played for about a year with Tony Knights Chess Men before he gained his first experience with the Rock 'n ' Roll in Zoot Money's Big Roll Band. 1968 Almond moved to Alan Price Set and 1969 to John Mayall. In the same year he founded the " Johnny Almond Music Machine " which he 1969, the albums " Patent Pending " and " Hollywood Blues" grossed whose late re-release were perceived (on CD), especially in Europe and Japan.

In " Patent Pending " Almond by Geoff Condon, Jimmy Crawford, Steve Hammond, Roger Sutton and Johnny Wiggins is accompanied. On the next album " Hollywood Blues", he plays together with Curtis Amy, Hadley Caliman, Joe Harris, Charles Kynard, Ray Neapolitan, Joe Pass, Earl Palmer and Vi Redd.

In the early 1970s he founded with Jon Mark, who was with him part of Mayall's successful and style- "Turning Point" Quartet, the folk-rock - jazz band Mark- Almond, published until the early 1980s eight albums. Last Almond worked in the San Francisco area as a session musician and music teacher.
