José E. Benedicto

José E. Benedicto was an American politician and in 1921, acting governor of Puerto Rico.

Career

José Benedicto studied at the University of Madrid. After a subsequent law studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his 1902 was admitted to the bar he began in Puerto Rico to work in his new profession. He was also temporarily District Attorney in Arecibo. He also taught law at the University of Puerto Rico. In 1908, he was appointed Minister of Finance ( Treasurer ) of Puerto Rico. During the First World War he was promoting the sale of war bonds. This nearly $ 10 million was earned. He also led a legal battle against the tobacco industry in Puerto Rico, which was only in 1924 decided by the Supreme Court of the United States in his favor.

In 1921, José Benedicto was appointed Acting Governor of Puerto Rico. He bridged so that the time between the end of the term of office of his predecessor Arthur Yager and the inauguration of the new governor Emmet Montgomery Reily. Shortly after taking office Reilys Benedicto was accused of corruption and dismissed from the post of finance minister. Later, however, he was acquitted. Of his subsequent career nothing is handed down.
