José Gustavo Guerrero

José Gustavo Guerrero ( born June 26, 1876 in San Salvador, † October 25, 1958 in Nice ) was a lawyer and diplomat from El Salvador. In addition to senior diplomatic positions as a representative of his native country in various countries and the League of Nations he was in the years 1927 and 1928, Foreign Minister of El Salvador. From 1937 to 1946 he served as past president of the Permanent International Court of Justice and from 1946 to 1949 as the first president of the newly established International Criminal Court.

Life

José Gustavo Guerrero was born in 1876 in San Salvador. After his studies in his native city and in Guatemala City and his doctorate in 1898, he was from 1908, first charge d' affaires ( business support ) his country in Washington and in 1912 Minister Plenipotentiary ( Minister Plenipotentiary ) in Rome, Madrid, Paris and the Vatican. 1926 he was appointed a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. He led the delegations of his native country at several meetings of the League of Nations and in 1929 and 1930, President of the General Assembly.

From 1931, he was a judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice ( StIGH ) in The Hague. From his election to 1936 he worked there as vice president and from 1937 until the dissolution of the Court in April 1946 as its last president. He was then at its successor institution, the International Court of Justice (ICJ ) is selected, and worked from 1946 to 1949 as its first president. He was thus the only judge who presided over the two courts as president. Besides it only belonged to the Belgian jurist Charles de Visscher at both the StIGH and the ICJ. He acted after the end of his time as President of the ICJ to 1955 as vice president and remained there until his death in 1958 as a judge of the International Court of Justice.

José Gustavo Guerrero in 1949 made ​​an honorary member of the American Society of International Law and nominated in 1948 and 1949 for his work for the Nobel Peace Prize. He died in 1958 in Nice.
