José Miguel Gallardo

José Miguel Gallardo ( born September 29, 1897 in San Germán, † July 18, 1976 in San Juan ) was a Puerto Rican politician. In 1940 and 1941 he was twice appointed acting governor of Puerto Rico.

Career

About the youth and education of José Gallardo nothing is handed down. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He was a teacher and later as a professor at the University of Puerto Rico. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. Between 1937 and 1945 he was Minister of Education of Puerto Rico. He fought for bilingual education of the children of his homeland. Gallardo also belonged to the American Association of University Professors and the Reserve Officers Association. He was also a member of a Masonic Lodge. With his wife, Ida, he spent most of his life in Río Piedras.

Gallardo was appointed twice as Acting Governor of Puerto Rico. First, he had held this position between 28 November 1940 and February 3, 1941, then again from 24 July to 19 September 1941. Meanwhile practiced the former Congressman from Pennsylvania, Guy J. Swope, this office. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 José Gallardo was responsible for the conversion of its territory to defense measures.
