Jose Tomas Sanchez

Jose Tomas Cardinal Sánchez ( born March 17, 1920 in Pandan, Philippines, † March 9, 2012 in Manila ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Sanchez entered the Seminary of the Holy Rosary in Naga City, and received his doctorate at the Pontifical and Royal University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Manila (UST ) to Doctor of Theology and received on 12 May 1946, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then worked as a chaplain in Legazpi City and Sorsogon, where he also taught at the seminar. He then lectured at the Aquinas University of Legazpi Catholic theology and formed the new priests at the Seminary of Naga City from.

1968 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Lesvi and Auxiliary Bishop of Caceres. He received his episcopal consecration by the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Archbishop Carmine Rocco, on 12 May 1968. Were co-consecrators the bishops Flaviano Ariola of Legazpi and Arnulfo Arcilla of Sorsogon.

He was first appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of Lucena and 1976 1972. From 1982 to 1986 he served as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia the fortunes.

In 1976, he became president of the Committee for the Lay Apostolate, 1976-1980 Vice- President of the Episcopal Conference and head of the Commission for the military chaplaincy. From 1981 to 1985 he was a member of the Standing Commission of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences. In 1974 he was a delegate of the Philippines to the III. General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.

1985 Pope John Paul II appointed him Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

On June 28, 1991, Pope John Paul II was a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Pio V a Villa Carpegna to the College of Cardinals. On 26 February 2002 Cardinal Jose Tomas Sanchez was elevated to cardinal priests per hac vice.

From 1991 to 1996, he served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.
